Jan 20, 2011 · As stated the LS-1 is known for cold start piston slap. It is the combination of short skirt pistons and material expansion rates that causes this. Generally, it is nothing to be concerned with and you need not take any special measures.

Though the LS1 is one of the best known examples of factory engines known for piston slap, it’s a common issue for many other high performance designs. Per Stothers, “Certain block designs will transmit the noise much easier than other blocks, and newer aluminum blocks are particularly susceptible.

  25. Apr 23, 2012 · First a decent engine, gearbox box and wiring loom, probably something from a vy or newer as the vt and vx ls1s had alot of issues like piston slap and oil pressure drops. A second hand vy or vz v8 pcm and bcm from the same car as they are linked and would cost more to get them tuned to talk to each other then it would to buy a second hand pair.

I sold my Disco 1 with 275k on the oil, it did not smoke, rattle or knock and at the time I had the oil pressure relief valve changed at 240k oil pressure was still at factory specs.

  6. Piston slap, or cold start knock, is caused by the piston tolerance being too lose. When the engine cools the piston and rings shrink as does the cylinder sleeve. Thus the tolerances are too loose and when you start the engine the piston rattles around causing the CSK or PS if you prefer.

  10. Piston slap sounds more ominous, almost like a rod knock, but distinct enough to identify. Even at it's mildest, I don't think I'd ever describe it as a tick, but it can be a light tapping sound. It's likely lifter noise from at least one lifter not pumping up right away.

  14. The Piston slap in the Hemi's and LS motors sounds worse than it actually is. Many of these motors have gone 200k+ with no issues except some noise when you first start it up. I have several UOAs that have low aluminum content and low wear metals showing that the piston slap in my Hemi isn't doing any damage.
